How Attending Women in BIM Has Transformed My Day-to-Day Work as a Young Woman in the Industry

It’s no secret that this industry has traditionally been male-dominated, and with the additional challenges of working in a tech-focused role like Building Information Modelling (BIM), I knew I had a journey ahead. However, finding the Women in BIM (WIB) community has been a huge community to support my journey—not just for my career growth but for my daily work life and confidence as well.

Building My Network and Support System

One of the first things that struck me about WIB events was the welcoming atmosphere and the sheer number of talented women who were excited to share their experiences. In my early career, it felt tough to find people who understood the specific challenges of working in BIM, but here was a whole community of women who got it. Now, if I come across a tricky project, I know I have a network to turn to for advice.

Gaining New Skills and Staying on Top of Trends

The Architecture, Engineering, and Construction industry is changing quickly, with new software and techniques coming out all the time. WIB events are always packed with insights on the latest tools, which has helped me stay sharp in my work. Whether it’s learning about sustainable building practices or exploring how BIM integrates with new tech like AI, I come away with fresh knowledge that I can use almost immediately in my role.

Navigating Challenges as a Woman in a Male-Dominated Space

One of the most empowering things about WIB is the open discussion around the unique challenges women face in our field. The conversations are so honest; it's like a reality check that reminds me that we are all facing the same challenges. Hearing from women who’ve been through similar hurdles and how they overcame them leaves me feeling powerful and determined.

A Sense of Belonging in the Industry

Above all, Women in BIM has given me a feeling of belonging in the AEC industry. It’s encouraging to see more women stepping into BIM and tech roles, bringing fresh perspectives to the field. Knowing that I’m part of a movement that’s not only advancing my career but also making the industry more inclusive for future generations of women feels incredibly rewarding.

Why I Recommend Women in BIM to Anyone Starting in the Industry

If you’re a young woman in AEC or BIM, I can’t recommend Women in BIM enough. Whether you’re looking to build your network, learn new skills, or find mentorship, it offers invaluable resources and a sense of community that will truly enhance your career.

So, if you’re looking to feel more connected, confident, and inspired in your role, I encourage you to attend a WIB event or join the community.

If you fancy a bit more of a chat about how WIB helped me, please drop me a line below and I would love to introduce you to the world of WIB.
